Kmilley - Levi's Nightmare

In the land of dreams, one will find Levi's Nightmare

Opening Thoughts:You know something, the last two maps I've played have some with downloadable texture packs that they insist I work with, really it isn't that bi an issue because both these maps deserve their new colours (Well okay this map didn't entirely need them, but the teture pack is still usable pat this map so it's okay) but I have seen maps that have told me I'll need t download them to nderstand whats going on only to discover that all they did was retexture the diamond. What I want to say is that if you are going to use a texture pak with your map then PLEASE either get it tested or have a friend run the map first and ask their opinion on a texture pack, because a fesh pair of eyes can often make the diference.

Visual:We are once agan bac in the realms of story focused adventure maps so the visuals are lacking slightly. Don't get me wrong the blend of the textures used for buildings are very good, making each building susinct and different. But the towwns themselves just proved forgettable, now later on when you head undergorund is where the changes become noticable, I can remember those rooms vividly despite having played the game last night. So yes the visuals should be seconded to the story, but it is still important to ae them stand out, and this map just didn't quite do it for me, despite it's texture pack.

Challenge:This map has no puzzles an would be assumed to be easy, however I'm giving it top marks in the challenge department for two reasons. Firstly when the map directs you to a new area you can usually assume that somewhere along the way you will be savaged by zombies, and when I say savaged I don't want you to think of Dead Island, where early hordes consist of 2 zombies and a puppy. Think of Left 4 dead, where there seem to be tons of the buggers pooring in form everywhere and it's just you and your sword. Secondly, this is a story map, it has no need for sending you through large puzzle sections to test you, it only cares aboutt pushing yo forward and through the story.

Length:Reccently in thee reviews I've started using the term spacial padding to explain long sections of runnning that have no reason other than getting you to the next room. At first glance this map seems to have a lot of it, with you having to take lenght walks and boat trips to get from place to place. But in this game it works, you need the long walks turning in to or out of darkness to build up the hopelessness of the atmosphere as well as to give you a good chance to see how far the black dots have spread (we'll get to that). But there were some sections where the maps I was givern didn't give a clear enough direction and got lost in spotless areas, which did prove frustrating.

Story:So the basic story here is that you play as Levi (duh) a man who seems to have been merciesly umped in the middle of nowhere, wih no memory it is up to you to find out your past whilst uncovering the mystery. Right off that bat I had a sort of 'meh' feeling for this map, I mean how many times have we seen the amnesia card pulled out? But after 10 minutes I came to a realisation, the amnesia was mostly inconsequential, yes it will no doubt come back as some large revelation at the end of the map, but for most of the map you are reading about the towns people and the plague that has befallen them, which is MUCH more interesting then reading about the protagonist having flashbacks constantly. The notes from the townsfolk was a true highlight, with lots of fun an well written dialouge to be found within, and an ending that was quite clever and lots of fun.

Things That Need Improvement:- Direction, keep the maps but put down some sort of obvious signal on the maps so we now where to go, like the lava fountain, I coud follow that very easily on the map.
- Visual style, all I'm saying is a bit of colour in those buildings would go a way to making them more distinct, it isn't 100% neccesary but it is something to think about.

Things That Need No-Improvement:- The story
- Length or Challenge

Final Thoughts:This map is fun, a little bit spooky but still fun. If you love the kind of map that has a focus on story an atmosphere then this is for you. If you are more of a parkour or puzzle person... well this probably isn't going to change your faith, but it is still fun and I do recomend a whirl.
